My Invisalign Trays Aren't Fitting - What Do I Do?

Invisalign is a popular teeth straightening method. The clear aligners allow people to get the picture-perfect smile they want without having to wear visible metal braces that could make them self-conscious or uncomfortable to smile in public.

But if you’ve started your Invisalign treatment and notice the trays don’t fit you properly, what should you do? Do you need to get new trays?

Not necessarily. Here are a few ways to resolve this issue.

Use the Invisalign Chewies

Invisalign chewies or seaters are small cylinders commonly used to help people get accommodated with their trays. The material is quite soft. The idea is to bite on them for about 5 to 10 minutes. The pressure will help the aligners go over your teeth properly so that you can begin your treatment.

Chewies are also a great option when you are getting a new set of trays, which will require some getting used to. The dentist who provided the Invisalign treatment can also provide you with some chewies.

Wear the Trays Every Day for at Least 22 Hours

Invisalign works best if you wear them for at least 22 hours daily. If you manage to get them to fit properly with the chewies, but then forget to wear your trays or go without them for hours on end, you will be right back where you started.

Not only that, but you will needlessly prolong your treatment, so your desired smile will be tremendously postponed.

Try Backtracking If You Switch to a New Set of Trays

If you have a new set and can’t get them to fit even with chewies and proper wearing, you might need to consider backtracking. This means wearing your previous aligners for a while since it’s likely your teeth are not in the optimal position for your new set yet.

However, backtracking should only be done at your dentist’s recommendation to ensure you are still following the right treatment plan. So if your new trays don’t fit even after using chewies, contact your dentist and ask if backtracking is a good solution for you.

See Your Dentist Again If Nothing Works

Sometimes, no matter what you do, the trays just won’t fit properly. This is a sign that your Invisalign treatment plan may need to be revised, in which case you will need to see your dentist again for a consultation.
