"I have been going to Jackson Family Dentistry for 21 years and highly recommend. They take great care of my teeth and I have never thought of going elsewhere. This year I even had a stranger ask me if I was a dentist. That is a clear indication that I am going to the right dentist."

What is a Dental Emergency?

While many emergency cases like knocked-out teeth, severe damage, or excessive bleeding are highly visible and obvious, other emergency situations are more subtle, though they can be just as dangerous. Generally, we define a dental emergency as any situation that is causing you pain that you cannot treat on your own. This includes:

  • Persistent toothaches
  • Cracked teeth
  • Dental work (fillings, crowns, etc.) that has become loose or fallen out
  • Signs of periodontal disease (bleeding, swollen, inflamed, or receding gums)

What to Do if Your Tooth Was Knocked Out

  • Recover your tooth and place it back in its socket, or put it in a bag of cold milk if this isn’t possible.
  • Contact Jackson Family Dentistry immediately to let us know that you’re coming in for an emergency appointment.
  • Treat pain, bleeding and swelling with clean gauze or cotton balls and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Don’t use aspirin, because it is a blood thinner and can prevent clotting.
  • Ice packs can be applied externally to the mouth for relief from pain and swelling.
  • Get professional dental care within 1-2 hours of experiencing an oral injury.

Is my toothache considered an emergency?

Yes! Toothaches are your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. This can mean something as simple as a piece of food stuck between your teeth, but it can also be a sign of an infection. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so call us today if you’re experiencing a painful toothache.
