The Benefits Of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a very popular cosmetic dentistry treatment, especially if you’re on a budget. With dental bonding, you can treat lots of different cosmetic issues including stained and yellowed teeth, gaps between teeth, misshapen teeth and more. The benefits of dental bonding include:

Fast Results

Dental bonding lets you get results in just a single appointment, and since the procedure is fast, you can usually treat multiple teeth with a single visit at Jackson Family Dentistry.

Non-Invasive

Unlike veneers, bonding doesn’t require any removal of your natural enamel. This may make it a better option if you have dental anxiety, or simply don’t like the idea of permanently altering your teeth for cosmetic dentistry.

Affordable Treatment

Bonding is cheaper than veneers, and is a great way to restore your smile if you’re on a tight budget.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry treatment that uses a special type of tooth-colored composite material to reshape your smile. This is sort of like the material that’s used when you get a tooth-colored filling.

However, instead of filling up a cavity, the composite material is applied to the outside of your tooth, allowing Dr. Heffter or Dr. Major to fill up chips, fill in gaps between your tooth, reshape the tooth, and improve your overall appearance.

How Dental Bonding Works

To begin the dental bonding process, Dr. Heffter or Dr. Major will clean your teeth. Numbing is not required for this treatment, since it’s non-invasive and doesn’t require any drilling, but it can still be administered if you wish.

Then, a special type of acid is applied to the teeth that will be receiving bonding treatment. This does not damage the teeth, but simply roughens up the enamel to provide a stronger hold for the bonding material.

Once the tooth has been prepared, Dr. Heffter or Dr. Major will select a tooth-colored material that matches the natural color of your teeth. Then, they will apply it directly to your tooth, sculpting it and reshaping the bonding material with special dental tools.

When the overall shape is right, the bonding material is hardened with an ultraviolet light. When this is done, the tooth will be checked to ensure it fits perfectly with your natural teeth. Minor trimming and adjustments may be necessary.

Then, you’re done! You’ll be sent home, or your dentist will move on and restore the next tooth if you’re having multiple bonding treatments done in one appointment.

Aftercare For Dental Bonding

One of the best things about dental bonding is that you don’t need to take any special steps to recover after your treatment. Unlike porcelain veneers, for example, you don’t have to wear temporary teeth. You can get back to your day-to-day routine immediately.

To care for your new smile, all you have to do is brush twice a day, floss once a day, and see Dr. Heffter or Dr. Major for a teeth cleaning and oral exam every six months. That’s it!

Preventive Dentistry Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during a routine visit?

At Jackson Family Dentistry, we focus on prevention and education because this is the best way to ensure that our patients stay happy and healthy. When you come in, we will examine your teeth and gums, and check for any signs of issues. If necessary, we will suggest x-rays. Our hygienists will thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, and you’ll leave our office with peace of mind knowing that your smile is taken care of.

How often should I come to the dentist?

According to the American Dental Association, patients should visit the dentist every six months. This ensures that all surfaces of your teeth are cleaned and any harmful substances are removed from between your teeth and under your gums. Book an appointment today for preventive care to maintain a healthy, strong smile for years to come.

What’s the difference between a family dentist and a general dentist?

A family dentist is able to treat patients of all ages and stages of dental health. While pediatric dentists are specifically trained to treat children, family dentists offer a wide range of services and treatments that span a lifetime, so you’ll never need to find another dental office when you children outgrow pediatric care.
